How is PCM different from DiSC and MBTI?

Behaviorally Anchored

PCM was derived from behavioral observation, not psychological theory. However, for those familiar with the science of human development, group dynamics, and social-emotional intelligence, PCM will resonate strongly. PCM offers specific descriptors of behavior and specific strategies for responding. The key to effectiveness is the ability of a model to promote understanding, recognition, prediction and action. DiSC and MBTI promote understanding and moderate recognition, but are less useful for prediction and action. In five years of polling our seminar participants, over 95% rate PCM as significantly more useful than any other model they have used. Primary reasons include predictive accuracy, actionable utility, and depth of application.

Diversity

By combining just six distinct personality types that occur within all people to varying degrees, PCM maps 720 unique combinations. DiSC and MBTI derive 16 combinations from four dimensions. With the addition of Phasing, PCM accounts for 4320 different permutations of the six basic types.

Prediction

PCM explains and predicts lasting personality change in terms of a progression (called Phasing). MBTI does not recognize personality change of this nature. DiSC only recognizes temporary changes due to current life conditions.

Depth

PCM is a next-generation personality and communication model for trainers, consultants, and leaders looking for more precision, utility, application, and long-term impact.

“PCM focuses on specific behaviors and gives not only reasoning for the behavior but specific strategies to improve/discontinue to the negative behaviors. DISC and MBTI focus more on understanding behaviors but not necessarily what type of response or action you should take to improve the behaviors. PCM also explains how progression of a personality change should occur and hopefully continue on throughout an individuals life.”

“I think that both personality profiles operate very distinctly and differently, depending upon your end expectation. DISC profiles people that you meet and what you might expect from an interaction with or from them. I will correlate to the wine before the meal. That means that PCM is the seven-course meal, including dessert. There are so many facets of PCM that come into play knowing that all individuals have six levels of personality that encompass each of us. Where you are today does not portray where you might be six months from today or even beyond that. It opens the realm to discovering all the facets that make up communication from one group to another. I have often seen people be on page 6 and I find myself on page 5.
